Local high school stars compete in PRCA arena

RAPID CITY, S.D. --- South Dakota’s best teenaged rodeo athletes showed their stuff Sunday afternoon at the 20X Extreme Showcase Rodeo, held in conjunction with the 33rd Annual Black Hills Stock Show Rodeo.

Fifteen-year-old Jamie Wolf of Pierre won the tie-down roping by a mile in Rapid City, posting a 13.7-second time to earn the coveted Maynard trophy buckle. The roper from Pierre has been rodeoing since he was 8, and hopes to qualify in 2010 for the National High School Finals Rodeo, the National Little Britches Finals Rodeo, and win a title in South Dakota 4-H.

“This rodeo is great,” Wolf said. “It gives us a chance to know what it’s like to rope in the same arena as former world champions and South Dakota stars. It’s just really cool.”

In its ninth year of showcasing high school rodeo talent for college recruiters, the 20X Extreme Showcase Rodeo was founded by Steve Sutton as a way to also give South Dakota youngsters a taste of competing in the same arena as the best rodeo athletes in the world.

Wrangler Jeans & Shirts provides long-sleeved shirts for each contestant, which are monogrammed and dry-cleaned courtesy of RCC. Prizes included trophy Maynard buckles for first place, hooded MTI sweatshirts for second, and tee shirts from SDSU and Gillette College for third- and fourth-place finishers.

The annual Black Hills Stock Show Rodeo is the first event of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s Silver Million-Dollar Tour, and can be a major stepping stone to rodeo’s Super Bowl for competitors.
